College Application Checklist for Juniors



ACT information





Most colleges and post secondary institutions recognized scores from ACT testing as a form of standarized testing used to evaluate college applicates. Please refer to the admission requirements for each individual college/university to determine policy and minimum score. 
Students interested in taking the ACT testing can register on-line at www.actstudent.org  or by receiving a paper application in the guidance office.  Students have an option to take the ACT test with the writing component or without.  Students need to review college requirements to determine if the writing section is needed for admissions. 
The ACT tests on 4 sections plus writing;English, Mathematics,Reading and Science. 
The English test has 75 questions to be answered in 45 minutes.  Students will be tested on grammar useage/mechanics and rehtorical skills(strategies, organization,style)
The Math test has 60 questions to be answered in 60 minutes. Students will be tested on Pre-Algebra(23%), Elementary Algebra(17%) Intermediate Algebra (15%), Coordinate Geometry,(15%), Plane Geometry(23%), Trigonometry (7%)
The Reading test has 40 questions to be taken in 30 minutes.  Students will be tested on comphrhension of four different types of reading selections: social studies (25%), Natural Science (25%), Prose Fiction (25%), and Humanities (25%).
The Science test has 40 questions to be taken in 35 minutes. It includes biology, chemistry, physics and Earth and Space Science.  Advanced knowledge is not required, however, basic background covered in general introductory science courses may be needed.  The test emphasized scientific reasoning skills instead of recall on scientific content.
The Writing test is a 30 minute essay.

Week of January 26,2015
Monday-Friday:
Making a Video on Space or Creating an Internet Website on a Space Topic
Goal: To plan, design and produce (if equipment is available) a video or website on one of the science, technology or engineering topics listed under “Procedure”.
Key Concepts: Understanding some aspects of the science, technology and/or engineering involved in the construction
of the ISS and the science research that is conducted on the ISS; learning about ISS-related space careers; and video or website planning, design and production.
Subjects: Biology, chemistry, physics, Earth sciences, astronomy, technology, engineering, computer skills, careers, language arts (writing script for video or text for website).
Materials: video camera and editing equipment, or a computer for the website design.
Procedure: Planning a video or designing a website on an ISS-related topic requires students to become more deeply involved in understanding an aspect of the Space Station. Students work in teams of three or four to plan a video project or design a website on one of the space-related topics below. Links to websites

Solve stoichiometric problems involving relationships among the number of particles, moles, and masses of reactants and products in a chemical reaction.  •  Predicting ionic and covalent bond types and products given known reactants •  Assigning oxidation numbers for individual atoms of monatomic and polyatomic ions •  Identifying the nomenclature of ionic compounds, binary compounds, and acids •  Classifying chemical reactions as composition, decomposition, single replacement, or double replacement •  Determining the empirical or molecular formula for a compound using percent composition data

In- Class: Students will learn the electronegativity differences in covalent and ionic bonds and how to distinguish them.  They will learn about polarity and bonds.

Tuesday:

•  Classifying chemical reactions as composition, decomposition, single replacement, or double replacement •  Determining the empirical or molecular formula for a compound using percent composition data

In- Class: Students will learn how to draw the Lewis dot structures of different chemical formulas.
Homework:  draw the 6 assigned structures; study notes
